Many of Europe’s biggest cities have more than one airport, and now Malaga has been added to that prestigious list.  A new airport has been under construction for the last 19 years, and will open on Monday.  Javier Avion is the chairman of the board of directors at the new airport and says “We’d hoped to open 18 years ago but a few minor setbacks delayed things.  I’m proud to officially open the airport now though, well now on Monday, and look forward to receiving our first visitors from the UK”.

Ryanair is one of the first airlines to be operating flights from the UK to the new Malaga Merida airport.  Seamus McBallox from the Ryanair Remote Airport Discovery Team told Costa Del Sol Update “It’s great to be able to give people more choice, and even greater value.  We’ll be flying into Malaga Merida Airport from Monday, if we can find any pilots”.

A press release states “The new Malaga Merida Airport is situated a convenient 395 kilometres from Malaga itself.  The airport boasts facilities which were state of the art when construction began in 1998.  The airport is expecting to welcome mainly travellers from the UK who appreciate a budget experience.”

Out Of City Airports

Some customers have expressed surprise at the distance from Malaga city.  A transfer to Malaga will take approximately six hours, and could be costly.  Spain’s Minister For Airports Which Aren’t Quite Where You’d Expect Them To Be, Alfonso Alonso, says “People have no reason to complain.  Paris Vatry is 131 miles from Paris, Munich West Airport is 70 miles away from Munich, and London Luton is just no where near London at all”.

Malaga Merida airport is no different.  If you want cheaper flights you have to be prepared to travel a little further from your actual destination.” Mr. Alonso added.  “We’re are expecting literally tens of customers every month”.

The airport’s main lounge will also offer a comprehensive retail experience for travellers.  Luxury brands and goods will be on sale from some of the world’s top names, and also local specialist suppliers.  Alongside the latest Armani fragrances and Gucci watches, customers will be able to purchase sombreros and inflatable goats which are particularly popular with some travellers from the north of England.

Just Too Far Away

Avaition engineer Mike Rack is a member of Malaga International Numerous Great Engineers.  He says that this new airport is just too far away.  “The only people who will fly there are people tempted to save a few euros who haven’t bothered to look at a map.  When they realise it’s no where near Malaga they won’t be happy.  That said, when some people realise Malaga is no where near Blackpool they are not happy.”
