Confusion Over Hotel Closures In Spain

There is confusion in Spain today over the length of time hotels will be forced to remain closed due to the coronavirus situation.  A government expert is saying that no one knows, and it’s impossible to predict when the hotels will be able to open again.  However, some independent experts are saying that hotels will reopen before the end of May this year, whilst others say that hotels will not open again until 2021.

Business owners and the general public are finding the mixed messages confusing.  Chris Anoroc from Variable Auditing General International Network Andalucia says “No one could possibly know, the world’s greatest experts with degrees are saying they just don’t know when this will be over.  All we can do is look at the numbers and listen to the experts.  There should be no confusion”.

The luxurious Hotel Pozo De Pulgas in Torremolinos has been empty since lockdown began.

Contradictory Claims

Despite this, Facebook expert Joanne says hotels will definitely open soon.  She posted this morning to her 73 friends“The government don’t want to loose tourists money so they will open hotels again in May.  My friend said this is going to happen and she knows because she watches YouTube”.

Another Facebook expert has refuted this claim though, advising his 17 followers that 2020 is a write off.   Mike Lunge posted (in big letters) “Forget this year.  Hotels aren’t allowed to open until April 2021.  The government have decided this but aren’t telling anyone.   It’s so they can install 5G in the hotels whilst they are empty so they can read people’s minds”.

Worried Hotel Owners

Hotel owners are worried about their businesses and confused by the conflicting statements.  Polly Sherman from the Hotel Pozo De Pulgas in Torremolinos says it’s hard to know who to believe.  “We have government experts saying that they are monitoring the situation and will make a decision when it’s appropriate, and Karen on Facebook who says we will be open again by the end of May”.

Expats living on the Costa Del Sol are finding the current uncertainty troubling.  Anne Fernandez runs a Facebook group where expats can express their outrage about Brexit and a lack of skate parks for the over 60s.  She says “I’m outraged by this.  It’s outrageous. Every Tom, Dick, and Enrique thinks he’s an expert because they’ve read something by someone else who isn’t an expert.   I’m starting to post memes on Facebook now because people pay more attention to those than to real experts.  I’m rapidly becoming an expert at it”.

Stew Pidd thinks this is fake news.

Fake News

Some people are claiming today that this is fake news, though they can’t decide which part of it is not real.  Stew Pidd lives in Estepona but is originally from Birmingham.  He says “Actually I’m not from Birmingham, I’m from Dudley.  It’s fake news, except for the things I understand.  Everything else is fake.  Boris is best.  It’s basically just the flu.

  1. When will the ‘All you can eat English Breakfasts’ places be open. This is more important than when will the hotels be open.

  2. The last time I went to Spain I found myself surrounded by foreigners. Nobody told me there would be Spanish people in the hotel and I couldn’t understand a word. I’m still waiting for a refund, and I won’t be coming back until I’ve got one.
