Mayday Morris Dancing Banned

Despite the current lockdown situation in Spain, there are fears that some defiant British expats plan to go ahead with traditional May day celebrations on the 1st of May.  The government has announced that any Maypoles which are erected overnight will be removed, and anyone “caught dancing with funny little bells on their legs” will be arrested and fined.

Maypole and Morris dancing are activities which would not be possible to undertake whilst practising social distancing.  Enrique Bailarin from the Costa Del Sol County Council’s Department For Banning Peculiar Activities Which Probably Don’t Happen Anyway says “Just because it’s May day we won’t be relaxing the rules.  It’s not safe for groups of people to be dancing around a pole with ribbons and ropes.  Even if we weren’t in lockdown though, we’d probably ban this because it’s just weird”.

Brits Being Oppressed

The ban has angered some Brits who feel victimised by the decision.  Daniel Zuko from Dance International Costa Knowlege says “This is wrong.  I didn’t want to go Morris dancing, but now I’m not allowed to do it, I really want to.  We are being oppressed!  It’s not right for the Spanish government to trample over our slightly odd but honoured traditions.  I think this is a reaction to Brexit, they are punishing us.”

The statement published by the government also bans Morris dancing and Maypole erections in private gardens.  Anne Fernandez runs a Facebook group where Brits express their outrage over Brexit and a lack of blue rinse hair colouring during the lockdown.  Anne says “I’m outraged by this, so are my members.  Morris dancing around a Maypole is a tradition we enjoy every year.  It’s understandable that we can’t do this as a group now, but I don’t see why I can’t do it in the privacy of my own garden.  Dancing round the Maypole on one’s own would be hard, a bit like playing twister, but I’ve spent hours practising and now that’s all wasted.  What an outrage.  Tom and Judy have even been polishing their bells, they are very disappointed.”

Not Fake News

Despite the completely genuine and authentic nature of the government statement, some people are claiming this is a hoax.  Stew Pidd is originally from Birmingham and now lives in Torremolinos, he says “actually I’m not from Birmingham, I’m from Solihull.  This is fake news.  Completely fake.  It’s nothing to do with May day, it’s about 5g.  They are trying to stop us from finding their 5g transmitters  so they don’t want us to go outside.  Everyone knows it.  Bill Gates owns Morris Dancing.  This is his master plan.  Big up Boris.  Fake news”.
